Apple makes A killer operating system for its computers. MacOS is beloved for its out-of-the-box stability and ease of use, but some of its included programs lack a lot of the functionality we expect. Apple doesn’t often listen to its customers, stubbornly refusing to add simple features that would make the platform even easier to use. Lucky for you, we’ve highlighted the best third-party applications for macOS to augment and upgrade your macOS experience.

Every Mac user needs to install these third-party apps!

Some are for niche uses, but others fix gaps in vanilla MacOS. Many of these apps aren’t free, but most have free trials you can check out while you decide whether to buy. It’s also common for them to sync with companion apps on your iPhone. Have a look at the list below and give them a try. These macOS apps might just make your life a little easier.

Alfred (Free, Paid)

Source — Alfred

The default search tool on MacOS(Spotlight) is a great way of quickly accessing the data that you are looking for, but it lacks to give some important information/find and interpret everything you ask for; it has room to go deeper.

This is where Alfred comes in.

As mentioned on their website — “Alfred is a supercharged alternative that lets you create custom shortcuts to programs and file folders, activate system commands by typing, create automated custom workflows that begin with the push of a button or a typed phrase, and, well, a lot more.”

It makes your whole world completely different, efficient and much more productive as you can quickly access exactly what you are looking for.

It’s free, but you can purchase a version called Powerpack that has more features, such as contacts and app integrations. It costs 29 British pounds (around $38) for a single user license or 49 pounds (around $64) for a lifetime of free upgrades to subsequent versions of Alfred.

Magnet (Paid)

Ever had a problem trying to fit more than 2 windows on the desktop? Worry no more as Magnet is here to save you from constant misery(specially if you are a coder or video creator.)

Thirds, quarters, fifths and much more, magnet will snap your applications into place the way you customised them to be.

If you have ever used Windows 11, you might have noticed this feature that automatically snaps open windows to best suit your needs. You can chooses to customise or use the preset layouts(there are tonnes of possibilities)

This app is worth the $3 if you don’t want to mess with resizing window borders constantly. Magnet ($8) is another good option, although now that they’ve raised the price from $3, BetterSnapTool is a better deal.

Ulysses (Paid)

Ulysses is the best blogging and writing application there is to find in the market.

I love Ulysses’ plain text and clean interface for writing longer stories/blogs, but it’s also perfect for short stories, novels, poetry, and scripts. It strips away all the unnecessary icons, buttons, and settings and lets you focus on your work.

It has amazing features such as directly publishing to Medium, Ghost, a Wordpress website and exporting as Html.

You can get a free trial before committing to the subscription fee. (You can opt for $6 per month instead of the annual payment plan.) If you do shell out, the iOS app is bundled with the MacOS version. And, if you are a student, you get this app at a subsidised rate.

Shift (Free, Paid)

Have you ever gotten tired of keeping a bunch of tabs social media and work-related tabs open to see if you have any notifications that you have to respond to?

I sure have, and Shift has been the cure to my troubles as it streamlines my accounts, apps and workflows.

Instead of having to sign in to all your email, workflow, and social media accounts with individual browser tabs, you can link all of them into Shift.

That means having just one app window open for all your work tasks. You can hook up Gmail, Slack, Instagram, Facebook Messenger, Airbnb, LinkedIn, Spotify, Google Docs, and more (plus Chrome extensions!)

The Advanced tier unlocks everything you’ll want for, uh, $100 per year. Try the basic (and free) tier first.

Day One (Free, Paid)

Journaling is a meditative experience, but if you’re like me and your handwriting looks like an SOS message carved into a rock, you tend to avoid writing on paper.

So, you choose to type it(the lazy way) and journal it on your iPhone, iPad or Mac.

Day One is a great digital journaling experience that lets you insert photos, save voice recordings, and export your logs in various formats, like PDFs.

Your journal entries are end-to-end encrypted, automatically backed up, and secured with a passcode or biometrics too. There’s a free version, but it’s severely limited, so you’re better off paying the $35 per year for the full suite of features.

There’s a seven-day free trial available.

Dropover (Free)

Source — Droopier

So, you need to drag and drop files from one application another, but it’s too time consuming and complicated?

Dropover allows you to create a temporary virtual shelf and store files inside, like Yoink. After you’re done adding files, you can drag them some or all to a new folder, notes, email etc. So easy, right?

You can literally add any type of file to the drop zone.

This app is completely free and will save you time and make you 10x more efficient than you were earlier.

Bartender

Bartender is one of the magical tools that let you customise your Mac’s toolbar. If you have too many apps(especially on the M1 Pro and Max MacBook Pros) it will help you manage them by using various intriguing methods.

They can sort it alphabetically, using hotkeys to launch the application and use advanced shortcut features to launch using other supported apps such as Alfred an Spotlight.

This is the best way to well manage you drinks that are kept on the shelf😅.

Hope you liked my collection of these third party apps that will make your life more productive!
