You already know M1 chip is the most powerful and the most efficient processor Apple has made in its history of processor (sure it will change with time). Eventually, Apple upgraded MacBook Air, Mac Mini, MacBook Pro and the iMac with their M1 chip. Say welcome to the newest M1 chip member in the family, Apple iPad Pro. This article is all about that.

Inside the Box

When you open the package, you will get an Apple Magic Pencil, Magic Keyboard in addition to your precious iPad Pro. (only if you added them while placing the purchase order). A meter-long USB-C cable is also there and if I am not mistaken, Apple includes a 20W Charging Adapter in the package.

The Body

This iPad Pro (2021) powered with a M1 chip looks quite same as its previous model. Unless you look carefully you will not be able to identify several little differences.

iPad Pro is available in two different colors: Space Grey and Silver. There are four separate speakers in the top and in the bottom. Five different mics have been placed in order to provide a higher-grade audio recording or a talking experience. Apple decided to get rid of the old Type-C charging port and included a USB 4.0 Thunderbolt port. It means you can gain access to much higher speed network connection or a faster data transfer than the USB-C previously did. Unfortunately, the charging time has not shown a noticeable change.

Versions

Basically, there is a 11-inch version and a 12.9-inch version. Both of them are available in Wi-Fi mode and Wi-Fi + Cellular Mode.

Performance

This is a crazily powerful device, a huge improvement from the previous one. Here is what is upgraded…

  • 5G
  • Liquid Retina XDR display
  • M1 Processor
  • Bigger Battery
  • USB 4 / Thunderbolt Port
  • Improved front camera

As I said, this iPad Pro is about 35% faster than the previous iPad Pro version. It is a great improvement. According to the storage versions you will get different RAMs in your iPad Pro. The 1TB and the 2TB storage versions will have a massive 16 Gigs of RAM and the other 128GB, 256GB, or 512GB versions will come with an 8 Gigs of RAM which is still amazing. Both CPU and GPU have 8-cores to function. It is a great feature for people who loves to do mobile gaming with their iPad Pro.

Every single app you install in this iPad Pro will work smoothly and effectively. You can even keep as many as apps in the background and swap between any of them whenever you want and pick up from where you left. Even when swapping between the biggest apps you will not feel a difference. This is basically a Laptop with a separate keyboard and a touch screen. Since there are lots of things working at the same time the battery got slightly bigger and at the same time, they had to thicken the size of the iPad Pro. Even though there is a bigger battery it can hold for 9 or 10hrs (greatly depends on what you do). You can record 4K 60FPS videos with the rear camera (only wide).

This Apple iPad Pro is enabled with the latest 5G network technology. That literally means you are welcome to use the ultra-fast internet speed whenever it is available. In the settings, you can choose the network options an LTE, 5G or Automatic. In the Automatic mode device network will switch between LTE and 5G depending on the availability but it tends to drain the battery more quickly.

The next big thing is the Liquid Retina XDR display. It has a great brightness range when comparing to the previous displays in iPad Pros with a mind blowing HDR quality level. Sadly, the XDR display is only available for the 12.9-inch version, the 11-inch version comes with just Liquid Retina display — no XDR.

Photography with iPad Pro is not a very common thing. Although the front camera is a really useful when doing video calls (or if you are brave enough — selfies). In this iPad Pro, Apple introduced an Ultra-Wide Front Camera with a enhanced AI. If you are taking a video call with several friends on your side, you do not have to place the device away from you to capture everyone. There is also a feature called Center Stage which can be used to follow the focused face on the camera. When you move a little, the camera will also move focusing your position (it does not actually move but it works like an eyeball). When you are doing a video call alone and if someone joins you from the side, the camera AI will try to expand the frame for a perfect fit to capture both faces (if the feature is on).

Worth buying?

Currently, this may be the best tablet out there in the market. That just doesn’t mean you have to go for this. If you are so desperate to have this or frustrated with your current tablet (iPad) then this is the one for you. You can always choose the smaller version but have to live with the Liquid Retina display (not much of a problem).

If compared with a MacBook, MacBook is bit affordable than the iPad Pro 12.9-inch version and does not have a touch screen display or the 5G connectivity. I’d say this is a great device for people who are looking forward to doing some professional / heavy work with their tablet. The Apple Magic Keyboard can turn this into temporary laptop, but it is not a great alternative for a laptop, even the keyboard isn’t much stable to carry around when connected. It is actually a wise decision to think twice before going for something this big.
