For years, on Apple’s phones, we’ve had the proprietary Lightning connector. At the time the Lightning connector was introduced, it was fantastic compared to the I-hate-the-person-who-invented-this-crap micro USB connectors that many devices were using.

To this day, if a manufacturer wants an accessory to receive Apple’s blessing to work with iOS or iPadOS, they need to go through the MFi program. This, of course, brings in no small amount of revenue.

If you’re Belkin or Anker or another major company who wants to produce Lightning accessories, you’re not going to create some knock-off cable and hope for the best. No, you’ll go through Apple and pay the MFi troll toll to get Apple’s seal of approval.

However, the move to USB-C on the iPhone 15 means a potential loss of MFi revenue for Apple — which is likely the reason Apple has delayed the move to USB-C on the iPhone for so long.

So you can be sure they’ll try to nickel and dime consumers somehow.
