Rumors, leaks & renderings for the upcoming 2020 iPhone show a camera module with 4 lenses — but only three cameras. So what’s the fourth lens for? Leaks by analyst Ming-Chi Kuo and others describe it as being a laser time-of-flight sensor to improve iPhone photo quality, as well as provide 3D sensing technology for Augmented Reality applications.

It’s certainly no secret that Apple has been pushing forward with Augmented Reality technology over the last few years — apps that use AR to overlay computer-generated images, characters & data over a live view of the iPhone screen have been showing up all over the place, including past September Keynote Events.
