When I first heard about the new camera orientation via leaks, I was really shocked. It looked so bad to me that I didn’t think Apple would actually implement it. But as we all know, I was really wrong: it did end up happening. Fortunately, the real deal does actually look much better and I have to admit that the design has grown on me quite a lot. But wether you like it or not, the question remains just why the hell Apple actually had to change it? What was the reason?

#1 The Marketing Reason

To me the most logical answer seemed to be that with this design change Apple could very clearly distinguish the new iPhone 13 from the older iPhone 12 without changing anything else. If — in about a week or so — somebody walks down the street with their new iPhone 13, everyone would certainly be able to see that he/she has the very latest iPhone. At least if they are somewhat aware of what Apple announced last week.

But this reason was not the only marketing reason which Apple had. The distinction between Apple and the rest of the smartphone world that would be created with this remarkable design choice, was…
