Use your MacBook 💻 as a Wi-Fi router 🛜 to share a wired connection

If you’ve got an ISP providing a wired connection but no Wi-Fi router, your MacBook can come in handy as a Wi-Fi router! 💻🛜

I recently ran into this problem while moving to another country and not having my Google/Nest Wifi mesh router(s) yet because they haven’t been delivered. While we paid our local ISP to provide Internet, we had no way to share it to our devices ⛔.

This became a crisis because our kiddo needed to watch The Little Mermaid on Disney+ 🧜‍♀️📺‼️

First, I connected my MacBook to the wired Internet plugged into the wall 🔌. I used a Ethernet-to-USB-C adapter (like this one on Amazon) that added a “USB 10/100 LAN” device to my Network tab as shown below.

Next, I followed the general steps that Apple provides https://support.apple.com/guide/mac-help/share-internet-connection-mac-network-users-mchlp1540/mac. These steps tell you to go to Settings → Sharing → Internet Sharing as shown below.
