It’s always the quiet ones

During every Apple event, there’s always one particular announcement, feature, or service which catches the eye of the national press, and it’s usually not the headline product.

For instance, your non-techy mate probably isn’t going to be reading about the new Camera Control button on the iPhone 16 today. Instead, she’ll catch wind of the new hearing aid feature coming to AirPods Pro 2 later this year.

Apple is smart with this kind of stuff; it knows it needs headling-grabbing material for each big event to be successful. The iPhone 16 will sell like hotcakes because of course it will. A lot of people will buy the tepidly updated AirPods Max because of course they will. But the world will sit up and take note when it hears that Apple is offering ‘clinical grade’ hearing health features to the masses via its earbuds.

As it turns out, they’ve been busy doing a lot more with the AirPods lineup, too (AirPods Max aside). That’s why, for me, it was the highlight of the iPhone 16 event.

AirPods 4 come of age

The standard AirPods have been treated to a complete design overhaul. Resembling AirPods Pro without the silicone tips (Apple refers to this as an open-ear design)…
