On Wednesday April 15, 2020, Apple released its latest smartphone, the iPhone SE. With the launch date on Friday, April 24, this budget iPhone will have Android users wanting to get a taste of the action.

It is not the first time Apple has recycled an old design. The first generation of the iPhone SE, which was released back in March 2016, was the same design as the iPhone 5S from 2013. It featured the latest A9 chip from the flagship iPhone 6S from then and incorporated many welcoming features such as an updated camera and a new rose gold color option. When introducing new budget smartphones, recycling an old design and upgrading the internals have proven to be Apple’s formula for success. The new iPhone SE, the second generation of an iPhone under this name, is essentially an iPhone 8 from 2017, but with internals and features that can’t be beaten for the price. It is this traditional design that has kept many users from upgrading to Apple’s more expensive flagships.

The new second-generation iPhone SE features an A13 Bionic Chip, which is touted as the fastest chip ever in a smartphone, beating out all of the Android competitors that are 2, 3, even 4 times the price. This is the same powerful A13 Bionic Chip featured in Apple’s flagship iPhone 11, iPhone 11 Pro, and iPhone 11 Pro Max released last September. So, customers who do not want to spend a lot of money can spend as little as possible to get a phone that has many capabilities as the current Apple flagships.

Portrait Mode has finally arrived on a budget iPhone. The last iPhone with a single lens to receive a portrait mode upgrade was the iPhone XR from 2018. The iPhone SE features the same image signal processor from the flagship iPhone 11 and iPhone 11 Pro series. You are able to capture breathtaking DSLR quality photos at the palm of your head on a device that costs so little compared to any new smartphone out there.

With 6 Portrait Lighting effects, in addition to the standard portrait mode, this smartphone camera is hands down the best single lens camera for the price.

Video Taking on iPhone SE. Image: Apple

The best photos aren’t enough for you? No problem! The new iPhone SE shoots 4K video at 60 frames per second. You heard that right 60 FPS! For many years, iPhone has already been praised for having the best video quality on a smartphone. Now, the same great video quality is on the most budget-friendly iPhone. It is very rare to find a new smartphone at this price point that is able to take 4K video at 60 frames per second.

Are you hanging on to your iPhone 8, 7, 6S, or 6? The new iPhone SE has a traditional home button with the second-generation Touch ID sensor. It unlocks twice as fast as the first generation from the iPhone 6 and features a haptic feedback home button that was not featured on the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6S. The Touch ID sensor is one of the most secured fingerprint sensors with a 1 in 50,000 chance of it being compromised. It is more secure than most smartphone fingerprint sensors on the market.

Water Resistant up to 1 meter for 30 minutes. Image: Apple

The new iPhone SE is rated for IP 67 water resistance. It can withstand splashes from any kind of liquid without sustaining any damage. This is a welcome upgrade for those that are still holding on to their iPhone 6 or iPhone 6S.

The new iPhone SE is made for years of software support. Currently, it ships with iOS 13 and I expect at least five years of software support. This is DEFINITELY a pro of buying iPhone. The software support is out of this world. Apple, to this day, is still supporting the iPhone 6S from 2015 with iOS 13. The iPhone 5S from 2013 received 6 years of software updates up to iOS 12. I fully expect the iPhone SE to have software updates at least until 2025. You will not receive this kind of software support on any Android competitor, at any price point.

The iPhone SE comes in three colors: black, white and Product Red. The era of the iPhone with white screens have come and gone. All iPhone SE models come with a black screen. With the black screen, the phone looks clean when the screen is turned off.

It is amazing that today you are able to buy an iPhone, an Apple Watch, and a set of AirPods ALL for less than the price of many smartphones out there. The era is over where Apple is known as the more expensive brand. There are many competitors who have caught up in price and are now selling more expensive products.

In this end, the iPhone SE will be Apple’s top seller for a long time. It is just the beginning for this phone. With the right amount of features and specs at a great affordable price, the iPhone SE is sure to attract people from all over. From the penny-pincher, to the grandma that finally wants to give up her flip phone, to even the average Joe, this phone will sell in millions all around the world.
