More children will be able to attend school with a full stomach

KENSINGTON, Md — The Maryland Meals for Achievement bill (SB818) and Maryland Cares for Kids Act (HB315 — cross-file to Madaleno’s successful bill) were signed into law today, May 8.

Thanks to the first bill, 31,100 more students at 50 additional schools will be able to benefit from the free breakfast program. The second bill eliminates the reduced-priced category for school breakfast and lunch, and makes it free, providing meals to 48,000 more children statewide. Prior to this bill, a single mom making $22K could not qualify for free meals for her kids — this has now changed.

State Senator and gubernatorial candidate Rich Madaleno is thrilled that so many children in Maryland will be able to learn effectively with a full stomach in school thanks to his work in the General Assembly, pushing for these two bills to be passed.

“Kids shouldn’t have to worry about when they’re able to eat next: they should only worry about their grades. I am ecstatic to see my leadership in the General Assembly turn into real results for the children of Maryland. With my proven record of achievements for Marylanders and by delivering on my promises, the citizens of our state get an idea of the kind of leadership they can expect from me when I’m elected Governor: no platitudes, only real-life results.”

Rich Madaleno has served Montgomery County for 16 years in the Maryland General Assembly. He is an expert on budget issues, serving as Vice-Chair of the Budget and Taxation Committee. Additionally, Rich has been a leader in passing legislation on key progressive issues like marriage equality, ensuring funding for Planned Parenthood, investing in education, gender identity anti-discrimination, and protecting the environment.
