Democratic candidates said they would release their tax returns,

but most of them haven’t followed through. How can we trust their word if elected governor?

KENSINGTON, Md — Today State Senator Rich Madaleno is calling again on his fellow Democratic candidates and Governor Larry Hogan to release their tax returns. Most of the Democratic candidates said they would release them — only Shea/Scott ticket did. For the rest of them: nothing is in sight. The campaign of Ben Jealous had even claimed to be “compiling them already,” yet, here again: nothing in sight.

“It makes one wonder,” said Madaleno, “how is one to trust any of these candidates who haven’t released their tax returns — but said they would — to govern the state of Maryland? Unless, if their idea of governing is like that of real estate owner Larry Hogan: governing in the shadows, without the people of Maryland ever knowing if their governor, who makes decisions directly affecting their lives, is tied to other special interests.”

“And what are we to make of them not delivering on their promises? Are we to simply believe them and then forget all about it? We already have a president who blurts out statements and then walks back on them or denies them, with no accountability. We don’t need that kind of governance here in Maryland. If they can’t even deliver on what they have agreed to, what about their countless plans of action and campaign promises? What else are they not going to deliver on, if elected governor?”

On April 17, on Tax Day, Madaleno did what Donald Trump has always refused to do and released six years of his tax returns in an effort of transparency.

“We owe that to the people of Maryland,” Madaleno said, “because the office of governor is such a high office. We need to be a beacon for the rest of the nation, and at a time when our President refuses to be transparent, we in Maryland must rise above. I have released six years of my tax returns for transparency’s sake, and to remain true to my word: when I say I am the candidate who delivers results and has a progressive vision, I mean it. I don’t just talk the talk, I walk the walk.”

Madaleno had called on his fellow Democratic gubernatorial candidates and Governor Hogan to release their tax returns as well, but only one Democratic ticket followed suit so far, that of Jim Shea and Brandon Scott.

Rich Madaleno has served Montgomery County for 16 years in the Maryland General Assembly. He is an expert on budget issues, serving as Vice-Chair of the Budget and Taxation Committee. Additionally, Rich has been a leader in passing legislation on key progressive issues like marriage equality, ensuring funding for Planned Parenthood, investing in education, gender identity anti-discrimination, and protecting the environment.
