Madbox takes a global perspective when creating games for millions to play. With that perspective comes strength from the culture that we continue to build that unifies us across both of our studios. Today we dive into Madbox Barcelona, its founding and what’s next in gaming for this team.

First, we kick things off with a few words from Alex, Studio Manager @Barcelona, introducing Madbox BCN before we go into talking about the culture that makes this one of the best places to create games at.

The Barcelona studio was opened at the end of 2019, and it feels like it was both yesterday and 10 years ago! At the moment we’re about 15 people in the studio, and we dedicate most of our energy to creating games that players will enjoy and remember forever. Just like the rest of Madbox, our studio structure is very flat. Teams tend to work in small autonomous squads and take most of the decisions on their games, from the ideation to the launch, with the support of all the departments in terms of tools, marketing, tech, etc…” — Alex

The vision the team has is very much similar to that of Madbox Paris, ‘create games that the world will enjoy & remember forever’. Given this pursuit, they’ve produced and market tested over 20 games so far with many more in the pipeline! This quite a feat as regionally, Spain has had strict measures in place in order to manage the Covid-19 situation. For most of 2020, the studio had to stay connected with each other digitally with many having never met physically before until recently. Communication is fundamental in seeing creativity thrive and that leads us into our next topic, feedback.

“We place a great focus on providing our Madboxers to learn quickly, so that they can make increasingly better calls.” — Alex

Studio culture can have a resounding impact on productivity but how do you encourage a healthy environment where people are trusted and push to be their best every day? You simply rely on the openness and willingness of each to provide feedback. BCN understands this and it’s a part of everyone’s daily ritual. It’s also how they’ve grown closer and connected to each other.

“It’s still a very young studio but with a lot of passion. People are always willing to help and everyone is super hard working. It has a positive and fun environment to work in and people are always willing to receive feedback in order to improve.” — Jan

While the studio is still small in comparison to larger outfits in the area like gaming giants Ubisoft Spain or Supercell, the passion is still very much real for this team. And with that passion comes growth. Madbox BCN is ready to supercharge their game with hiring new people that share in the same spirit of ‘casual people out to achieve with mad ambition’. Tom helps handle the recruitment efforts and this is what he had to say to those who are looking to begin their journey with Madbox:

“Passion and Love for games is the main requirement for working with a team built on transparency and trust.” — Tom
