A small detail with a big cost

Have you ever gone to a wedding and received a favor that you either left at the wedding or never actually used? Favors are usually small details at a wedding, but if it’s going to be something guests are going to forget or not enjoy then you really shouldn’t waste the money.

Favors seem like a minor detail that doesn’t really matter, but it can actually get very expensive. A paper fan for guests with your initials on them are a great idea, especially for those hot outdoor weddings. However, for a wedding with 200 guests you’re going to spend almost $500 on something your guests will use during the wedding and most likely throw away after. Another popular favor is to have can sleeves made with your wedding date, and initials, which can cost over $700. That is an expensive favor that guests might use at the wedding and accidently throw away or forget to take it home. A less expensive idea is personalised candy favors. When doing food as favors you can get 300 personalized york peppermint patties for less than $140.

Many couples now are going the food route for favors. At one of our very own, Kelley & Kyle’s, wedding they gave out chocolate chip cookies as their favors. The favor also tied in the way they first met. They both worked in the Kroger bakery, one day she offered him a chocolate chip cookie. He said it was the best cookie he had ever had and that he needed to make her his wife. The guests raved about the cookies and some didn’t even take them home, they ate them right there at the wedding. Many guests took the favors home to friends/family and others that weren’t able to make it to the wedding.

When it comes down to it, you really don’t want your favor to be something that people are going to forget and then you’re stuck with a bunch of succulent plants in a pot that says Mr. & Mrs. If they forget cookies then you probably are going to be less upset about a bunch of cookies rather than a bunch of playing cards with your initials on them. People are not going to forget to take a cookie home, the cookie might not even make it home.

Another new thing to the wedding scene is welcome gifts for out of town guests. For out of town guests, it is a good idea to get a block of rooms at a convenient hotel in the area. Providing a welcome gift upon their arrival to the hotel is a great way to show them you appreciate them making the trip and makes them feel welcome. In the welcome gift you might have a basket with waters, directions to the venue, and different attractions they might want to see/do while in Columbus if they have extra time. Kelley and Kyle included some Buckeyes for their out of town guests to show them some Columbus pride.
