Each month, we will share a brief summary of what we have read or heard that we found interesting. We warn you, they will not necessarily be the most current content, but they will be content from which we have learned something or that have inspired us.

In July, we have learned from:

A podcast:

K Fund’s Podcast: “Iker Marcaide’ story: from setting up a large fintech company like Flywire to building an entire neighborhood in Valencia (La Pinada).”

In this podcast, Iker Marcaide tells the story of the launch and escalation of Flywire (formerly peerTransfer), a company born to facilitate and reduce international wire transfers, with an initial focus on the educational world. Currently, Iker leads Zubilabs from where they are launching different projects / companies with the objective of creating social, environmental and economic value. From all the projects launched, the best known is the Barrio La Pinada in Valencia through which they are building an eco-neighborhood with their future inhabitants. A neighborhood that seeks to generate a healthy environment, a more efficient and sustainable way of life and also develop the community.

Book:

Cathy O’Neil: Weapons of math destruction: How Big Data Increases Inequality and Threatens Democracy

Weapons of mathematical destruction is the name that mathematic Cathy O’Neil gives to the numerous technological solutions based on data that companies and administrations constantly use (and so do we) to make decisions and which, in many cases are not so transparent, objective and neutral as they have told us. It is worth reading some of the examples explained in the book to reflect on how vulnerable we can be to the use of different variables in algorithms and to social biases.

A Twitter thread:

Laura Lacarra, BI & Big Data Tech of Telefónica, published this thread of different options to help motivate girls to approach technology. In case you are considering new goals for the return of summer vacation, there is no excuse.
