Those jobs aren’t coming back.”

That was Steve Jobs’ reply when President Obama asked him what it would take to make iPhones in the US. I think Jobs gave that curt response as a way to say, “You’re asking the wrong question.”

Those jobs aren’t coming back because technology is replacing them, not Chinese people. Sure there has been a brief period in recent history where labor in developing regions has been cheaper than robots, but technology has been patiently advancing in the background. Now it looks like we’ve reached an inflection point where artificial intelligence and robotics are poised to become useful and affordable. It looks like they really might start the process of taking our jobs in earnest. So, what does that mean for us?

I don’t have an answer, but I aim to be a part of the process. As Co-Founder of Original Fuzz, I’m going to be sharing what we learn in a new series I’m calling “Made in Nashville.” Learn along with us as we build an American manufacturing company and brand for the 21st century.
