In 2016, our team partnered with WeTransfer to help define and build its new mobile product. The cloud-based transfer service asked us to take on the role of strategic design & development partner and join them on a journey to discover the next step for WeTransfer on mobile.

As a proper introduction, we organized a design sprint to map out the project and ensure a better understanding of the relationship between the two companies. For the coming days, our mission became to break through traditional silos by creating an application that allows its users to collect content from anywhere to share with everyone. Together, we selected the strongest solution to prototype and test with users.

Different concepts were tested, with both changes in interface design and user experience to improve performance. The initial prototype was supported by specific use cases, which we cross-checked during the design sprint. Later on, WeTransfer conducted several tests with external parties that specialize in user research. User research was extremely important. WeTransfer is dealing with 40 million monthly users. We want to provide them with the best possible product.

We gathered enough information to convert the prototype into an MVP. Unfortunately, the prototype had multiple core features that were not supported by WeTransfer’s current backend. Together, we decided to expand the scope of the project and shifted more manpower towards backend activities to build a new and improved backend that integrated with the current WeTransfer system.

In October of 2017, the final MVP launched as WeTransfer for iOS. Based on feedback and data, a roadmap with improvements and features has been defined. We are currently operating as an integrated team making bi-weekly product improvements and identifying new features that fit the mobile proposition. Read our showcase for more information.
