There’s irony in contradiction

I’m a trader. I’ve talked about trading as a source of income in previous posts. It’s a tricky game by anyone’s standard, part nerve, part patience, and a whole lot of mental agility. I think anyone who’s traded will agree. Success is difficult.

There’s a popular saying in the trading world, goes like this:

Cut your losses short and let your winners run.

It’s a great rule to follow, trouble is it’s not easy.

Traders see a trade going bad, but hang on to the thought “it’s going to come back.” Because it’s hard to pull the trigger when you’re down even by a little, most of the time you end up with a bigger loss.

On the flip side, when you’re ahead, you hang on with “I think there’s still room to squeeze some gains.” Because you always want more, so you pass it off as a minor pull back, but in the end you give back a bunch of gains.

There’s no way to know, if it were only black and white.

Cut your losses short and let your winners run.

Forget about trading, sounds like a pretty good life rule to me. But, how do you know what’s a loss and what’s a win? Maybe you have ‘to have’ some of one to understand the other.

Experiencing loss, helps you understand gain. Life’s not black and white either. Life’s a scale of contradiction. See the irony.

I recently discovered I had to go away to know what home is.

I’m going to let these lyrics to a fun little song Life is Wonderful by Jason Mraz helps make my point:

It takes a night to make it dawn
And it takes a day to make you yawn, brother
And it takes some old to make you young
It takes some cold to know the sun
It takes the one to have the other

And it takes no time to fall in love
But it takes you years to know what love is
And it takes some fears to make you trust
It takes those tears to make it rust
It takes some dust to have it polished

It takes some silence to make sound
And it takes some loss before you found me
And it takes a road to go nowhere
It takes a toll to make you care
It takes a hole to make a mountain

Life is wonderful

Without one, the other wouldn’t exist. Contradictions, that’s why life is wonderful and I love the irony.
