I have the touchwood in all the 4 workshops. But the past week workshop on Design Principle, Awareness & Design Trends is special. It is my favorite topic so I pushed myself to present. This topic is wasn’t new to me, I have already shared the same topic twice at Adiyamaan College Hosur and Image Salem.
Workshop Day — 10 March 2018
Nothing can be created without a great team and I’m a hard believer in team.
It was 3 member core team including me. Jeevanantham Jiva and Anantha Natarajan accompanying me on the workshop. We all reached 9:00 IST with a long 40 KMS drive. SSN buddies Shailesh and Vignesh of SSN Design Club (Student coordinators for the workshop).
Agenda:
10 mins — Intro.
20 mins — World of Kirigami (Activity).
30 mins — Element of Design and Design principles.
20 mins — Break.
40 mins — Awareness and Do and Don’ts.
20 mins — ‘Medhu Vadai or Donut’ (Activity).
30 mins — Design Trends
Kirigami Activity
Kirigami s a variation of origami that includes cutting of the paper, rather than solely folding the paper as is the case with origami, but typically does not use glue.
The session started with the introduction of Madrasters and team around by SSN. With a quick formal note, moved to the hands-on activity of Kirigami. First I made it as an individual Activity of asking the students to create their own kirigami art form in 2 minutes. Pulling them to recollect their childhood memories. Post 2 minutes formed a group of 5 teams. The participant count was 40, gave them 5 minutes of time to come up with one single story by combining all the kirigami arts. 5 minutes later the teams were pulled to the stage and asked to present a story for 30 secs. Without hesitation, everyone showed their excellence. Team interactive activity.
Meet the Stranger, form a team. And cuddle up with them.
Principles of Graphic Design
Narrated the students the 8 principles of Graphic design relating them to the movie posters. I will be sharing a separate detailed blog on Principle of Graphic Design and my finding in the future blog.
8 Principles: Balance, Contrast, Space, Emphasis, Unity & Harmony, Movement & Repetition/Rhythm, Simplicity, and Proportion.
Designers Awareness
Post the break shared the session on designer’s awareness. 45 must known tips for designers. It was the most interactive and nail-biting session of the day. Students were on the edge and referencing the points shared in the slides. In between on 27 tip (Slide), I stopped/paused. An activity paper was shared.
‘Medhu Vadai or Donut’ (Activity)
70 circles printed in the A4 paper. Each student is given a sheet and asked to fill/draw the circle with the circle shaped object they know. Like Smiley icon, Car wheel or Gandhi’s Spectacles. Completely of their own choice and creative thinking. Idea of this activity was shared by Arun Raj former World Skill Winner. This activity is given to the students who will be participating in the World Skills. So much involvement many completed all the 70 circles in 15 mins.
Design trends of 2018
Continued with the session and completed all the 45 points. Quickly moved to the final session of the day The Design Trends. Shared around 15 new trending Designs like Responsive Logo, Big Gradients, Authentic Photography, Sans into the picture, Isometric Design and few more.
With that, 3.5hours of sessions was completed with a group photo. My bad I missed to take Mandatory Selfie :P
