Madrasters is a creative community and self-driven community by the designers in India. We also have a Chapter in China & Kovai to add on. Team Madrasters is familiar with conducting Design Meetup consistently for 7.10 years. To organize such good meetups we need good team player or Manager (Officially called) to organize the Meetups. As of now the team organized #21 Meetups in Chennai.

Poke: Blog is about the Chennai Chapter Meetup Managers.

#01 — #09 Meetups (PUG — Recap)

Jack Anto (Myself), no term of Manager exist. Era of hard meetups. Those times, it is all about organizing and conducting Good Design Meetups. Designer to network at a commonplace. Be the 1st member of Madrasters, I’m the only resource to run meetup and I did in my own fashion. #01 — #09 Meetups will be on my count :) And rest is history!

Learn, Teach and Share.

#10 Meetup

Keshav Soni, Senior Interaction Designer

Keshav Soni (Responsible person for the Meetup), first experiment with the team. And the first insider forced :P to take the responsibility of heading the 10th Meetup. . Kudos to Kesh, he was doing a dual role as a Manager and Emcee for the Meetup. Nandri (Thank you) for accepting the first role as an experiment. Respect your guts!

Experience and regular practice made the team stronger. That one thing is still striving the team to go through in the constant phase!

#11 — #13 Meetup

Sesha, UX Designer

Once Keshav completed his meetup, again the responsibility has to be handed over another core member of the team. Sesha Devarajan the Meetup Manager. Many practise which you feel it the meetup was evloved by him. And he first coined the word Meetup Manager (MeMa - nickname, most commonly used by the core team :P) to Madrasters and with more structures. One of the most important structure, the selected Meetup Manager should handle 3 consecutive Meetups of Madrasters. The role of MeMa made him more close to Madrasters and to me in person. He became a best buddy to me and more like a brother in sharing thoughts. Thanks buddy for being with the team in all the tough time.

Birth of Madrasters

Madrasters for Designers

Almost at the end of #13 meetup. Madrasters got the strongest 34 member core team. Then we decided to rename PUG to Madrasters for various reasons.
Photoshop User group is rebranded to Madrasters. With the new name, fresh start. The meetup number started from #01.

Why a Rename or Rebranding?
Will share a separate blog story on the birth of Madrasters.

The number started with one again.

#01, UNCONFIE & #02 Meetups

Arun, Product Designer
Thulasi, Product Designer

Arun Raj & Thulasi Ram Young brains of the team and two meetup managers. 2 meetups and one UNCONFIE. About UNCONFIE you will be known in the upcoming months. Stay tuned with Madrasters. It was a hard time for them because of the new brand name. Creating awareness of rebranding is a new task for them. But they handled it with ease. Nandri boys, your efforts are matchless, you guys always made the Meetups high.

#03 — #05 Meetups

Jeevan, Product Designer

Jeevan Siva the oldest and finest gem of Madrasters. He is the founder of many agenda in the Meetups. He was the one who pushes me to have proper agenda for the meetup in early days. In specific the Ice-breaking activity, you see in the meetup, he is the major contributor. His inputs still continue in all the present meetup. Cheers and respect Jeevan, for all the great work you directed towards Madrasters.

Meetup Manager Responsibility

  • Budget allocation for the Meetup.
  • Deciding on the Meetup Theme.
  • Hall booking.
  • Identifying the Community Speakers/Inspirational Speaker
  • Finalizing the Perfect Date.
  • Meetup Website and Eventbrite UP & running.
  • Promotion end to end. Starting with Date announcement — to the Last Thank-you mailer to all the members attended the meetup. Pre and Post Meetup promotions.
  • Select the core team for the Meetup.
  • Dedicated designer for the Meetup.
  • Form Social media team at the Meetup on LIVE.
  • Logistic Team: Bringing all Madrasters Standee, Snack and other material to the venue hall.
  • Fix the Lime Light Speakers.
  • Finalize the Activity for the Meetup.
  • Rehearsal will all the Speakers and Limelights.
  • Emcee rehearsal.
  • Allocated and share the responsibility for the core team.

These are the high-level list. Break down/detailed list is huge. Just shared the overview of Meetup Manager responsibilities.

All these defined lists were achieved only because of all the previous Meetup Managers. I have the pride in saying, we are not an event management company and none of the core team has a experience in managing the event. We all achieved by putting our efforts and experience together. Big Respect to all the brains.

Nothing wouldn’t possible without the timely hard work.

#06 — #08 Meetups:

Jack

Jack Anto (myself) back to the action.

The stage was set and things were in place. All I need to execute perfectly. But things weren’t documented, it was into bits and pieces. I collated everything, documented it and I made it reusable for the future MeMa’s.

Unforgetable picture of mine. Made me to believe in me. I have also mentioned in same insta 9 months before.

Once again had an opportunity to wear the Madrasters T-shirt in Meetups after 4 years. My last three meetups handling as MeMA was memorable.

Pictures of memories.
