Recently, the launch of MG Hector from Morris Garages created a haul in India with over 38,000 SUV bookings in a few months of its debut. Now, Great Wall Motors (GWM company limited) have also decided to enter the game as a competitor to Morris Garages. Is it time to drive the cars that are “Made in China” in India?

What is GWM (Great Wall Motors)?

Great Wall Motor Company Limited is China’s largest SUV and pickup manufacturer, with over 54.305billion yuan (~$7 Billion+) in assets. Great Wall Motors owns 4 brands — Haval, Great Wall, Wey and Ora which covers 4 categories: SUV, passenger cars, pickup, and electric vehicles. Haval SUV has retained the domestic sales title for 11 consecutive years, becoming the №1 SUV brand in China and Great Wall pickup has led the domestic market in terms of market share and sales for 16 consecutive years.

Haval:

Translating Haval in Chinese means “Harfu” and as a contraction of “have” and “value”, which simply means “totally worth to it”. Haval is a specialist manufacturer of SUVs owned by Great Wall Motor with over 10 products under its hood.

Great Wall:

GWM sells passenger cars and trucks under the Great Wall brand. Their fleet includes C30 (won “2010 CCTV Compact Passenger Car of the Year in China”) and Wingle series pick-up trucks.

Wey:

WEYis a compact CUV (Cross over vehicles) of GWM’s brand and is marketed as the leading luxury SUV brand in China. The series includes Wey P8, VV5, VV6, VV7, and VV7 GT.

Ora:

ORA, established in 2018 is GWM’s answer for the fast-growing New Energy Vehicles or EVs (Electric vehicles) market. ORA stands for Open, Reliable and Alternative and is aimed at the young and upcoming city dwellers. It comes bundled with GWM’s AI system named “iPilot” similar to Tesla’s autopilot. They launched a model named Ora iQ5 and have R1 and R2 concept vehicles, hitting the roads in 2020.

Great Wall Motors entry into India:

Great Wall Motors recently pumped in an investment of Rs 7,000 crore venture in India. The firm will be headquartered out of Gurgaon but is looking to set up its manufacturing base in central or southern India.

Great Wall Motors, is also in talks with General Motors to acquire the Detroit carmaker’s last remaining factory in India, located at Talegaon in Maharashtra, which is capable of producing 165,000 vehicles a year.

ORA R1:

The R1 is Ora’s smallest and most affordable offering in its domestic market. Great Wall Motors is planning to showcase the small electric hatchback in India at Auto Expo 2020. Ora R1 comes with a 33kWh battery which gives it an NEDC-tested range of 351km and claims 0–50kmph in 5.6 seconds. It takes 10 hours to charge an Ora R1 through a household plug but you can charge the R1’s battery to 80% at a fast-charging station in 40 minutes.

ORA R1 Price in India :

We anticipate that ORA R1 is going to launch in India for ₹7 Lakhs ex-showroom price and the on-road price of Ora R1 in India going to be around ₹8.5 Lakhs.

The expected launch date of Ora R1 is mid-2021.

Haval H6:

Haval H6 is the best selling SUV in China. It has been the best selling SUV every month in China for nearly two years. It features a 1.5L, four-cylinder diesel engine for 161 BHP at 5600 rpm and 280 Nm at 1400–3000 RPM. The engine comes mated to a 7-speed DCT. GWM is trying to take on the big players with H6 in India’s SUV segment.

We expect that Haval H6 is going be priced at ₹15 Lakhs ex-showroom price and the on-road price of Haval H6 in India coming around ₹18 Lakhs.

Haval H6 Launch Date in India:

The expected launch date of Haval H6 is late-2020.

Summing-up:

Great Wall Motors is geared to get its initial impressions from the media and social media influencers in the AutoExpo 2020. The carmaker’s Indian Twitter page currently features three cars on the banner, which includes the Haval H9 and H2 facelift, and the Ora R1 electric car. This could be a hint at GWM’s plans for future models in India. Going by the specs and expected prices we expect GWM cars to get a positive response for Indian buyers.
