Aging is a natural process that began the moment you were conceived, and there are many ailments that take advantage of the weakened body systems that come with age. Geriatric medicine is a relatively new subdivision of the medical field that specializes in treating the ailments common to the aging population.

Medical conditions and aging

Aging itself is not a medical condition. However, there are certain medical conditions that are often seen in the elderly — hypertension, heart disease, Alzheimer’s, cancer, diabetes, senility, and arthritis to name a few. But not everyone will experience these disorders as they age, nor are these conditions only associated with aging. There is no definitive time in a person’s life at which they will definitely develop a medical condition, and there are many people who make it through their latter years in very good health, sometimes better health than those decades younger than them.

However, in general, an older population is more likely to require prescription medication, hospital stays, physician visits, and monitoring. Health problems become more common as a person ages because many diseases involve the deterioration of aging physiological systems…
