2.6k. Fantasy short. A photographer takes her dog on walks through a divine wood, not knowing she’s watched over by a new patroness.

Once, the Lady’s forest spanned as far as the eye could see, spreading its green touch out and over every horizon, but that had been long, long ago. She remembered. Oh, of course she remembered — how could she forget?

Herself and her sisters and their wide, wide kingdom, thinking all would be well forever.

Much had changed, as time had passed. Her sisters still lived, she was sure, she knew, but their pockets of wood were as distant and far off as the moon, or might as well have been.

She could not tread where the shadow of the wood did not cover, and the land between them was man’s.

Perhaps, soon enough, she would have no wood at all, all the trees cut down to stumps, all the bush burned, all the animals hunted for meat or run away, and then what?

Perhaps she would disappear with them.

Perhaps, perhaps, perhaps.

The thaw had given way to springtime, and as she walked through the wood her breaths caught on the air as warm spring breezes. Flowers bloomed in her wake, bursting up from their bulbs…
