Bear in mind they are mentioned in alphabetical order and not in the order of preference.

  1. Ace against Odds- Sania Mirza

An autobiography of the most iconic Indian player of all time, it narrates the life story of Sania Mirza and the myriad of hindrances that were laid in her career’s path. This book is one of those that leave an indelible mark on the reader’s heart. Even though I read it in the summer of 2015, I vividly remember each and every detail of it by heart. What makes it memorable is its evocative storytelling and emotional resonance, enabling readers to relive each moment.

2. Animal Farm- George Orwell

Written by my favorite writer, I am nothing but praises for it. Published in the 19th century, its timeless relevance marks it as a gem in the literary world. This book is about the rebellion of a few anthropomorphic animals in "Manor Farm" and the struggle of creating a just farm. Other than the main theme 'desire for power,' the book is full of various other messages, like corruption and inequality.

3. Prisoner Of Tehran- Marina Nemat

At the age of 16, Marina was arrested by the Iranian government along with her friends for openly criticizing Ayatollah Khomeini’s rule and was sent to the notorious Evin prison. This autobiography tenderly shares her story, infused with a poignant touch of grief and raw emotion. Everyone I’ve met mentioned shedding tears for days after reading this. The brilliance of this book is the simplicity of the words, benefiting non-English speakers.

4. Things fall apart -Chinua Achebe

Being one of the first modern African novels to receive global critical acclaim, it is a staple book in schools throughout Africa. Our main character, Okonkwo, is a respected member of the Umuofia clan located in modern-day Nigeria. Okonkwo’s fear of appearing weak, stemming from his father’s perceived weaknesses, is a central theme in the book, exploring how his pursuit of traditional masculinity becomes his tragic flaw. This book imparts lessons on various levels, from fighting for our rights to valuing our households and raising our children properly.

5. To Kill A Mockingbird-Harper Lee

Without even an iota of doubt, it is one of the prestigious works of English literature which has received praises from all over the world. At first glance, it seems like an ordinary story of two siblings in a fictional town, but with close inspection, one can clearly see the beauty with which Harper Lee has concealed the stark reality beneath the superficial story.

The story revolves around a girl named Scout who witnesses the trial of a black person charged with the crime of raping a white woman, enabling readers to explore the consequences of extreme hatred and prejudice.
