Bright Monday

Turning the third Monday in January, dubbed ‘Blue Monday’ in 2005 as a PR stunt from Sky Travel, into a brighter day.

Heralded the ‘most depressing day of the year’ due to the wintery weather, debt level, lacking motivational levels, the number of days since Christmas — and the time since failing new year’s resolutions.

January is a tough month. So, today we reclaim the day. Welcome to Bright Monday, where we’re sharing 7 of Fluxx mN heroes; people who excite, inspire, and motivate us daily, and why.

  • Colombian author and journalist Mario Mendoza. Author of the award-winning Satanás, Mendoza is known for acute cultural awareness and critique. “It’s storytelling a nation relates to”. (Credit: Dan Ramos)
Akala (Image Credit: Ents24)
  • Poet, social critic, and rapper Akala. Brother of pop sensation Ms Dynamite and MOBO Award winner, Akala received critical acclaim for Natives; a powerful, polemical narrative that charts his past and the history of black Britain. (Credit: Darlene Kijemba)

  • Justin Vivian Bond (Vivian); “a tornado of art and activism”. Described as the best cabaret artist of their generation, Mx Bond has been at the forefront of Trans visibility and advocacy since the early 1990s. (Credit: Paul Woodward)
  • Houston University professor Brene Brown. Her 2010 TED Talk, ‘The power of vulnerability,’ is one of the most viewed talks in the world. (Credit: Annabel Staib, Gemma Stafford & Lucy Willett.)

  • Chidera Eggerue aka ‘Slumflower’. The Nigerian-British author, feminist, and activist created the ‘#saggyboobsmatter’ movement. Her book What A Time to be Alone “promotes the importance of self-love and all the joy that can be found within”. (Credit: Toyah Panton)
  • Tash the brilliant teacher. Tash Willcocks, currently Head of Learning and Development Snook and a prominent teacher and mentor within the Design Community. Specialising in UX, “she continues to inspire and share her learnings — many years later”. (Credit: Anya Ellis)
V.S Naipaul (image Credit: The Time Magazine)
  • Nobel Prize winner V.S. Naipaul. Known for his ‘bleak accounts of displaced people’, Naipaul’s novels conjure intense imagery and thought-provoking prose. In 50 years he published over 30 books. (Credit: Zunaid Osman)
