Issue 01 : Welcome to Mahalo Design Digest

SO MANY POSTERS, GRIDS, AND CONVERSATIONS!

Get inspired by Pete Majarch’s movie posters.

The true path of mastery.

Pete Majarich spent a year creating a new movie poster every day. Here’s his reflection on the time well spent: What I Learned Designing One Thing Every Day.

Should be easy to build… right?

Easy idea’s aren’t always the easiest to build.

“It can be easy to build something that people request… But what’s really important is to build what they need.” The Slack design team goes deep into building their newest feature, Threads. Slack also wrote an article here on Medium about their new feature.

By the way, did you know that Slack’s roadmap is public? So awesome.

Nerd out on using a grid.

This guy Joel Beukelman is a legend. “Eight..8, 16, 24, 32, 40, 48, 56, 64, 72, 80, 88, 96. These are the numbers that run through my head at night.” I read that and instantly fell in love. For a couple years, I’m been trying to find people, articles and resources on examples of granular, practical systematic design thinking. He made awesome Sketch templates and wrote about it here.

“Of all the messaging interfaces, SMS is the most direct. No custom UI, no learning curve.”

SMS is back, baby! …or has it never left?

Anyone that has worked with me knows my love for SMS and conversational-UI. This article on SMS by Geoffrey Keating inspires all of us to consider SMS, not as a product, but as a way to access a product. And he mentions one my favourite apps of all time, Digit.

Shooooots—that’s awesome.

Check out Google Drawings.

Boxes, lines, and more.

Have you heard of Google Drive’s hidden gem, Google Drawings!? It’s not as feature rich as proper wire-framing tools like Axure (my personal favourite) but it’s great for creating user flows or even quick wireframes. You can even collaborate with others while you work and share it just like any other Google Drive feature.

Aloha! Have a great week! —Cody Iddings
