You are confirmed ‘suka yang sendu-sendu’

Or so, according to spotify algorithm. Been pulling valence and energy score of each IndieNesia playlist tracks (which is filled with many indonesian indie artists— duh), and good news to you sobat indie (or more likely good news to Efek Rumah Kaca), bcs you are confirmed suka mendayu-dayu uuuu dan suka yang sendu-sendu!

Used spotifyr package to pull the data from spotify web API, visualize ‘em with tableau, and voila. From 52 tracks in IndieNesia playlist, 27 classified as having ‘sad/depressed’ music emotion.

Classification of music emotions (sad/calm/angry/happy), inspired by RCharlie Sentify, made by examining track’s audio feature parameters. In this case, energy and valence.

As explained in documentation page;

Energy is a measure from 0.0 to 1.0, and represents a perceptual measure of intensity and activity. Typically, energetic tracks feel fast, loud, and noisy. For example, death metal has high energy, while a Bach prelude scores low on the scale. Perceptual features contributing to this attribute include dynamic range, perceived loudness, timbre, onset rate, and general entropy.

Valence is a measure from 0.0 to 1.0 describing the musical positiveness conveyed by a track. Tracks with high valence sound more positive (for example happy, cheerful, euphoric), while tracks with low valence sound more negative (for example sad, depressed, angry).

Tracks with high energy and valence score classified as happy song, while tracks with low energy and valence score classified as sad song. This classification system developed by spotify data alchemist basically allow spotify to give you songs recommendation based on your music taste, as well as creating tailor-made playlists for you.

My initial assumption is, most of the tracks would appear in sad and calm quadrant. But, to my own surprise, it is angry rather than calm (personally I don’t think Alkohol by Sisitipsi would be considered as an angry song??).

Many tracks classified in angry quadrant I’m not familiar with, but it gives idea to make music emotion classification more precise. Further sentiment analysis from track’s lyrics could be done.

But the overall result satisfies my personal taste, e.g. Banda Neira’ Sampai Jadi Debu (one of my personal fave!) won the saddest song title. Also the fact that, in number, majority of tracks fell into sad song catagory.

da yu v, men da yu; berbunyi sayup-sayup sampai (kbbi).

sen du; berasa sedih dan pilu (kbbi).
