The house, completed in 2012 has construction based on the renowned architect Mr. Laurie Baker — famous for his low-cost, practical and most sensible house designs.

Every room is cool, shaded and yet bright and airy. The high ceilings and the terracotta roof keep the house cool in the summer and cosy in the winters by insulating it from the sun. Every room looks out into the greenery and has its own quirks — be it the rustic furniture, fixtures, creepers across the window or tribal artifacts.

What does stand out is that many portions or places in the house have been left in the state of partial reconstruction. This is because we believe in recycling as much as we can, and the results are pleasing to the eye. Be it doors and windows made of quality teak from bygone eras or refurbished chests for storage, you’ll find a mixture of the city’s conveniences and the assurance of Indian artisan’s work in Mahua.

The house has a large centre room, where you can spend the day lounging, playing board games or simply reading. Some windows have a platform that is part playground, part bird watching station, part sleeping corner for children and adults alike.

The house is still adapting to its surroundings and vice versa, and we’re giving nature it’s time to decorate the brick and stone construction. As time passes, we hope to add more subtle luxuries to Mahua. Your suggestions for the same are most welcome.
