Air

Artist Interview

Air was considered to be one of the primary constituent elements of reality in ancient philosophical traditions in both the East and the West. In this image, multiple meanings of air converge, such as: the literal medium or atmosphere of air, air as breath (called ‘nous’ in ancient Greek and considered equivalent to ‘intellect’), air as a medium for movement by other species (the sea gulls), and air as a metaphor of electronic signal (as when we say, “are we on the air?”) since electronic signals irradiate our Earthly air. We communicate primarily electronically today, and the image evokes the broader context and substance of air which is usually invisible in its presence, which includes connection to others and cohabitance with nonhumans.
