Yelp can have a huge impact on local businesses, but research has shown that a staggering 87% of small businesses don’t maintain their Yelp page or manage their reputation across all review sites. We enlisted the help of the experts on Main Street Hub’s Platform SpecialistTeam to detail how to use Yelp more effectively. Check out their 5 steps below:

1. Claim your page.

Start by claiming your Yelp page, so that you can begin to enhance your profile. According to Yelp’s data, only 2.1 million businesses are currently claimed, so claiming and optimizing your profile can be the difference between someone visiting your business over a competitor. Claiming your page isn’t difficult, and you can follow our step-by-step guide here.

2. Fill in information.

Filling in all of your business’ information is important — not only does it make it easier for potential customers to find out everything they want to know, but if you do it well, it can make your business stand out. Filling in the correct hours, contact information, and basic business information is helpful, but uploading assets like your menu or adding the story of how your business got started will set you apart and get potential customers coming your way.

3. Add photos.

If your business’ Yelp page has photos, potential customers are shown to spend 2.5 times longer on it — and the longer they are on a page, the more time you have to impress them. Add high-quality photos of your food, your staff, and your business exterior — it makes you easier to recognize, it allows Yelpers a chance to get to see you in your best light, and it will make people feel great about coming to visit you.

4. Respond to old reviews.

The more recent a review, the more consumers find it relevant, according to one survey, but this doesn’t mean you shouldn’t respond to old reviews. Responding looks great to anyone who sees your page, and it might even remind old reviewers to come and see you again or even give you another shot. Research shows that responding to all reviews has a positive impact on a business’ bottom line.

5. Encourage customers to leave reviews.

There are a few ways you can encourage happy customers to leave reviews on your business’ Yelp page — especially when you have optimized your profiles. Without explicitly asking your customers for positive reviews, you can let everyone know that you’ve given your Yelp page a fresh makeover and ask them to check it out. As we mentioned previously, more recent reviews are more relevant to people checking out your page, and getting more reviews is the best way to attract more potential customers to your Yelp page.

Using Yelp effectively can get more customers in your door and keep them coming back. The more effort you put into optimizing and maintaining your profile, the more benefits you will see. Learn more about Yelp reviews in our free guide!
