Drasko Draskovic and Janko Isidorovic gave a speech at Open Source Summit China 2019, named Integration of Edge and Cloud IoT Platforms, and Janko Isidorovic participated in the panel Edge Computing in the IoT with representatives from VMware, ARM, Alibaba and Intel.

Last year and a half, Mainflux team gained valuable experience in advancing our open-source IoT platform by its integration with the edge instance, namely Edge computing gateway compliant with the LF EdgeX Foundry framework. For this development, Mainflux Labs received the Grant from Serbian Innovation Fund in 2018.

Considering many advantages of edge processing over cloud centric-approach, we realized the importance of connectivity, device management and data filtering in the form of IoT platform running on the IoT edge gateway.

However, during development, it was soon clear that these edge gateways must be controlled and managed from the core IoT cloud platform, where they themselves become “things” in the larger IoT-schema. Moreover, cloud IoT platform should also aggregate and store data from the edge gateways and devices connected to them, but also the data of other devices — sensors and actuators that directly connect to cloud, without a need for an intermediary gateway.

Using an example of LF EdgeX Foundry project for IoT gateways and Mainflux project as a cloud IoT platform for gateway management, Drasko and Janko presented the architecture of an end-to-end open-source source solution for IoT edge-fog-cloud continuum.

On the same day, Janko Isidorovic participated in the panel Edge Computing in the IoT. Technical experts from different spaces tried to address the issue of putting Edge Computing into practice, and many challenges of enabling edge network connectivity and different computing technologies for a variety of commercial IoT systems.

The panel can be seen here:

This year The Cloud Native Computing Foundation’s flagship conference,
KubeCon + CloudNativeCon + Open Source Summit gathered over 3,000 adopters and technologists from leading open source and cloud-native communities, as well as the C-level leaders across the ecosystem. It as always a great place to network with industry professionals and learn from the top cloud-native experts.
