Chiefs Promising This Year?

After a strong first game, Kansas City is looking to be pretty good. Let’s see why….

The Chiefs played the Patriots Thursday night in a close week one match up. Most expected Tom Brady and the newly improved Patriots offense to blow the Chiefs out of the water, but the Chiefs ended up winning 42–27. The night was very unpredictable, as Alex Smith played a very solid game, taking uncharacteristic deep shots. But, even more unexpected was the spectacular performance rookie running back Kareem Hunt. The Chiefs played a great game against one of the best teams in the NFL this season. Per usual, the defense played well, holding Tom Brady to a 44.4% completion percentage. But what is next for the Chiefs? They have the rest of the season to impress, but one problem has risen…. no Eric Berry.

During the game, Eric Berry suffered a ruptured Achilles tendon. An injury to the leader of the Chiefs secondary is sure to hurt the defense for the remainder of the season. Berry is one of the best safeties in the league. With him out, the Chiefs may struggle with upcoming receiving threats. Granted, Marcus Peters can pick up the slack, but the fear is that another injury may occur to another key member. Linebacker Justin Houston has just come back from a knee injury, back and better than before, but there is always that worry that he may re-injure the same knee. If that happens, the Chiefs could be in for a short post season run (if there even is one at all).

However, despite Berry’s injury, this could be the Chiefs’ year. They scored well against one of the best defenses in the NFL, kept Tom Brady to 0 Touchdowns and he was 16 for 36 by the end of the game. Keeping one of the best QBs in the NFL to those numbers is a HUGE win for the Chiefs defense. Not to mention, their offense was on fire the whole game. Despite a minor setback with the first carry fumble for Kareem Hunt, he quickly bounced back and had 148 yards rushing, 98 yards receiving, and 3 touchdowns. He was the driving force next to Tyreek Hill on offense. Hill had only 5 yards rushing, but he had 133 yards receiving, as well as a touchdown. The surprise to most was that the Patriots held Travis Kelce to only 44 yards of total offense. This caused Alex Smith to switch to his other options such as Hunt and Hill.

Overall, the Chiefs are a promising football team this year. If they can avoid any further injuries, the Chiefs will be a big obstacle for teams each week.
