Kindness and Smartness

We think intellect and kindness have nothing to do with each other. Winning a Nobel prize or solving a very difficult theorem is a feat of intellect whereas kindness is a mere virtue that is reserved to our private life. If we look around we see that there are those who don’t have much education but they know how to tend to their suffering tenderly, how to take care of despair, offer loving speech and smile to this world. Such an individual doesn’t add onto the existing suffering of this world. How wise!

To be kind is the highest form of intelligence, where we surpass our deep rooted selfishness and get a deep insight into the interconnectedness. Kindest people are the smartest. If we think this isn’t intelligence, we must try and sustain our kindness and see how tricky it is compared to problem solving. We may have solved many real technical problems and may possess many degrees and brilliant ideas. But how many of us have the capability to produce a moment of joy for ourselves and for our loved ones? To tend tenderly to our despair and suffering and transform them without adding onto the suffering of the world?
