The Altar within…

In Asia, almost every house, even the smallest ones: has an altar. People pay their utmost reverence to the altar and whenever they pass by it, they bow down — because they know that the altar contains the photos of their ancestors, their gods and all sacred texts. They can’t even bear the slightest thing happening to their altar.

We all do have another altar that’s so close to us, yet we don’t consider it to be altar-enough. Our body. Our body, right within it, contains our ancestors, our teachers and the wisdom of entire cosmos. While there were stars, flowers, sun and moon before we existed, it took billions of years for the cosmos to make our bodies. Yet we don’t consider our bodies to be sacred, to be a result of a timeless process of creation.

Many people rely upon torturous cosmetics and a whole lot of unwholesome things to derive respect from others and the more we try, the more we fail. When we truly look at ourselves as a living breathing altars carrying our ancestors and teachers, we generate real holiness within us. This isn’t given to us by others or bought somewhere, but is generated within.

When we respect ourselves deeply, others can’t help but respect us and we can’t help but respect others. Each one of us have the capacity to reclaim our holiness. This isn’t a mythical imagination or belief. This is the reality of things, as it is~
