Ways of ego…
There are times, not so often, where my veganism gets into my ego. I forget that I am a vegan solely for the well being of my fellow beings and for the planet: and definitely not to boost my goodness points.
In those times, I reprimand myself by consuming a small piece of cheese. This act helps me remember the uncomfortable truth that my life is solely based on many other people: who do all sorts of barbaric acts that I don’t agree with. And that I can’t cut myself off in a spiritual cocoon but have to co-exist within the “messy” world. And that any sort of “purity” or “goodness” is dependent on the otherwise perceived “impure” elements. I mayn’t drink and beat my wife, but the taxi driver who drops me to office may do so. I mayn’t eat meat, but the farmer who grows my food may.
By thinking so, we don’t vouch for their actions, but we invite ourselves to look deeply to realise that the ethical thoughts produced by our brain and our life are directly sustained by those who commit unethical acts. We remind ourselves that we have a role to play in wars and all other atrocities of the past and the present. This non dualistic thinking alone can help us to understand the other side better and shall lead us into the insight that helps us transform the bad within us and within others.
Spiritual narcissism is very dangerous compared to being non spiritual. If spirituality is a medicine for transforming ego, what on this earth can cure the spiritual ego? We might go around thinking that we are doing good, but we end up wrapping ourselves in the ego: as shown in the picture~
