Poetry is one of the most beautiful forms of literary art. It is also arguably one of the more difficult to master. While there are many poems that seem effortless and simple, a poet’s journey to create such beauty can be long and arduous.
Since the field is so challenging, poetry writing prompts are an excellent tool for a writer to use to stretch their mind while enjoying the journey. A great prompt can spark inspiration and creativity in even the most jaded poet.
Here are some creative prompts for poets to consider:
- Write a poem that captures your first impression of someone upon hearing their voice. You can write it based off the tone of their laugh, or what they have said to you so far.
- Write a poem that’s all one long sentence without any commas or periods, and only makes sense when read aloud. It should be as if you’re telling someone a story in real life. The first line is the title of the story, and the rest is the narration.
- Write a poem that describes your favorite song. It may be difficult to do without using lyrics in your writing, but you can write about the emotions it brings out in you or what it makes you think of.
