Quote from Amanda Gorman’s poem, The Hill We Climb.

The Role of the Poet

A poem is more than just a poem because it reveals the soul of its author.

But a poet is not an angel who sits on your shoulder whispering words into your ear.

Poets are ordinary people who, by sheer force of will, have transformed their lives into art. They are individuals who already had depth and concern in their own lives before they put pen to paper.

A poet explores the superficial level of things in order to break them down into their simplest construct, allowing the reader’s imagination to rebuild them.

Many times, a poet produces something new by melding two contrasting items together, such as love and hatred, war and peace, or even life and death.

The poet is a witness, a chronicler of fleeting events.

They take notice of these events and examine them thoroughly in order to discover the essence that captures their significance, then they connect them together into something greater than the sum of their parts.

Instead of just allowing things to pass by, they find a method to emphasize the importance of little details.
