Poetry is a collaborative art form.

It’s not just the author who gets to decide what goes into it. The reader also plays an important role in shaping the poem, because how they interpret it will depend on their mood and feelings at that moment.

When you write a poem, think about these two things: yourself and your audience.

In order for them both to enjoy reading your work, there are some things you should keep in mind as you’re composing it: imagery, rhythm, personification, end rhyme and climax.

These elements can make a good poem great and help capture the attention of readers so they want to read more!

1. Imagery

The best way to make your poetry readable is by being able to create powerful imagery. As the old writer’s adage goes: show, don’t tell.

The best poems are ones that which holds the five senses of sight, smell, touch, taste and sound.

If you want to create a poem that speaks to the five senses, then you need to offer an image or metaphor for each one. A field of flowers or lines that shine like stars could represent sight. You can show smell with a whiff of perfume or food…
