Is Poetry the Purest Form of Writing?

Unlike other forms of writing, poetry invites us to partake in a personal experience with the poet and the poem

What I love about poetry — in its purest form — is that it doesn’t sell you.

It invites you into an experience. Asking you to step into the world of the poet.

To see what she sees. To feel what she feels.

To become one with the poem, while still being an observer.

That makes poetry different from most other forms of writing, such as copywriting or blogging: Poetry invites you into its world; it doesn’t sell you anything. It’s like a painting that simply hangs on your wall and gains more meaning to you with each passing day.

I first experienced this with my mother when I was a curious boy of about thirteen years old.

I had the habit of taking her books from the shelves and reading them, which drove her crazy. But one day she read me a poem by Rabindranath Tagore called Where The Mind Is Without Fear.

Where the mind is without fear and the head is held high
Where knowledge is free
Where the world has not been broken up into fragments
By narrow domestic walls
Where words come out from the depth of truth
Where tireless…
