Talking with your feet

I’ve always envied choreographers. Their ability to take humans, and use their undulating limbs as paintbrushes to convey their vision makes it a remarkable artform. The part I admire most is that choreographers know at a certain point the work is no longer theirs, and that it’s up to the dancers to convey their story. In my opinion, it’s the ultimate gift of expression and communication.

You have this idea. Something you have to express, no, need to express. The idea starts to bubble up inside you to the point that your stomach hurts and your brain itches every time you think about it. So you decide…screw it..it’s now or never I have to do this! The only way to make this passion project burst forth from your creative unconscious…is to let others express it for you. Think about that for a second. You can’t play it out with an instrument or display it on a wall for all to see. You need put your faith in the strength and inventiveness of fellow artists to bring your dream to fruition. You have to impregnate others with your dream.

So you plan, argue, contemplate, cry, push, project and love your idea on to those you're working with. Then you realize..the dream is starting to change. Your ideas and the ideas of the participants start to blend together. While there is a natural resistance to this ideal…the final result is actually twice as satisfying. By sharing the weight of your dream, it lifts it to a whole other level.

“Coming together is a beginning, keeping together is progress, working together is success.” Henry Ford

Try another angle, go another path, reach out in a new way to those at work or those you love. Talk with you feet if you have too! You can travel a lot farther when you dance with a partner.
