I was a Star Trek-obsessed kid. I watched Star Trek 4, The Voyage Home about a dozen times, and I thought Data was the coolest android ever to grace the screen. I really wished I could be BFFs with Wesley Crusher. I made an early TNG uniform out of an aerobics unitard complete with an iron-on combage that my grandma found at a garage sale (I later found out it was a really early Happy Meal prize.) Whenever someone got me a birthday present, it was something Star Trek-related. Posters, trading cards, socks, you name it. Point being: I’ve been a Star Trek fanatic since I was a little kid.
When my mom and stepdad decided to move us to Montana, my grandma was concerned. She was a little worried about harsh winters and how difficult it is to drive on ice. She thought it may be too conservative, and she knew I’d moved schools twelve times before. Mostly, though, she was worried about how I would get my fill of Star Trek. There was no cable, we’d been told, and Star Trek wasn’t on regular TV very often.
It got worse, though. When we got out to the house my parents had bought in the sticks, there was no TV. You couldn’t get a signal, even with an antenna, and satellite companies weren’t going up that high on mountains yet.
