Apps as Expression of Identity

When you think of a company building an app, you imagine business minds analyzing market needs.

But when a student builds an app, they create a digital imprint of a slice of themselves. An expression of their identity.

This is the beauty and joy of computer science.

This summer, 400 students across 8 cities globally expressed themselves at our Summer Academy. Most shipped their apps and games to the App Store ready to share with the world.

In such a dense environment of ideas, everyone is inspired to search inside themselves to design a unique and creative experience. Our community motivates students to invest their whole self into bringing their vision to life.

I fell in love with computer science 7 years ago while building my first app, exhilarated by the experience of making an idea in my mind into a reality in the hands of my friends. It was an expression of a prior obsession of mine — a computer game I used to play instead of homework. My app “Helicopter” sold thousands of copies all around the world, providing a small value of entertainment to many people I’ve never known.

I feel the same joy today as I build my latest app Jukebox — a music sharing app. There’s a sound, a color and a feeling in my mind that I hope to share with love to my friends.

I’m humbled to be among a community of the brightest and most passionate creators in the world. I’m just one of many peers in the Make School community who has potential to create engaging experiences and solve real problems throughout their lives.

This community is a movement, an optimism, an energy. It has the power to impact lives of each maker, and each individual touched by their creations.

We are together learning to shape the world. Join us :)
