Many of you have heard of Giving Tuesday, a day to come together and give back to the organizations that do so much for our society. Tuesday, December 1, 2020 is your opportunity to say thank you with a donation to an organization that is making a significant impact in the world.

Not sure where to put your money? No worries, below you will find several different organizations from New York to Chattanooga, nominated by our community. Take a look!

GlamourGals Foundation in New York City

Since opening their doors 20 years ago, the GlamourGals mission has always been to inspire and organize teen volunteers to provide complimentary beauty makeovers and personal companionship to seniors in need. With COVID-19, senior isolation has increased from 60% to nearly 100%. This unprecedented spike in the isolation rate puts the cognitive health and well being of the senior community at a heightened risk. This year for Giving Tuesday, they want to go above and beyond for seniors across the country and write 10,000 notes to isolated seniors.

Pledge to write 10 notes or donate today to support this program.

Three out of every five children grow up struggling to read. They fall behind in school making them more likely to drop out of high school, hold a low paying job, and live below the poverty level. Mind Body Baby NC in Charlotte, NC

Mind Body Baby NC strives to educate and support new caregivers through the postpartum experience because when caregivers are nurtured and knowledgeable, children have the ability to reach their fullest potential.

According to Mind Body Baby NC, “Humans, and mothers in particular, are biologically wired to seek the support of a village. It is part of the biological social-emotional make up that builds our children’s brains and bodies. Today’s culture, however, has us living more separate than ever before. Mind Body Baby (MBB) knows every parent deserves confidence, community and support. When we invest that energy in them, we are investing in the social, emotional and physical wellness of our community’s children.”

The HAPPY SHOES Project in Chattanooga, TN

In the face of a battle with colon cancer and lengthy treatments, Sandi Sammons shared her hope and light with others through her words. With her feet propped up and her tablet in hand, Sandi snapped a photo of her “happy shoes” and began writing her story, more and more with each treatment. For nearly two years, Sandi used her “happy shoes” and her words as a way to lift up her joy, frustrations, faith, and inspiration to the world until her passing in April 2017. Today, Sandi’s legacy continues through the work of her husband, Keith, and The HAPPY SHOES Project.

The HAPPY SHOES Project inspires cancer patients to keep walking with encouragement, support, and inspiration. They distribute totes filled with items to make cancer treatment more comfortable and positive.

The Women’s Law Center of Maryland in Baltimore, MD

The Women’s Law Center of Maryland was founded in 1971 and incorporated in 1972 by a small group of passionate women law students and young lawyers who observed rampant, overt, and damaging discrimination against women. Over four decades, the Women’s Law Center has evolved from a group of dedicated and energetic volunteers to a professional organization with paid staff members who serve thousands of individuals each year.

According to The Women’s Law Center of Maryland, “Significant progress has been made and many obstacles to women’s success have been overcome. But full equality has not been achieved. In response to persistent challenges, our work continues through our direct legal services to protect the rights of individuals and strategic initiatives to achieve systemic change. WLC represents low-income victims of domestic violence in various legal projects, runs free education and referral hotlines for family law and employment law, and advocates statewide for the rights of women, along with other services and programs.”

Women’s Fund of Greater Chattanooga in Chattanooga, TN

The Women’s Fund of Greater Chattanooga (WFGC) fights the root causes of inequity facing women by looking at our systems through a multi-issue lens, rather than a single issue focus. They believe in educating people about women’s issues and empowering people to use their voices to change laws and policies that impact the lives of women. Their work centers on advocacy — teaching people to be advocates, supporting women’s groups, and leading advocacy efforts for women’s issues.

According to WFGC, “In the past 3 years (since we launched our current 49 to One campaign to elevate the status of women in Tennessee from 49th to 1st nationally), we’ve successfully advocated for 15 pieces of legislation that improve life for women across our state.”
