Asheville Make-a-Thon Recap
June 23, 2018 marked the first Asheville Make-a-Thon, a 12-hour design and development marathon benefiting local nonprofits and humanitarian causes.
There were 40 makers and volunteers, joining forces to help serve 9 meaningful organizations across Asheville and Western North Carolina.
“The energy, optimism and joy that comes out of the 12-hour collaboration is hard to describe. I am grateful to be a part of it,” said Julie Obenauer, Make a Mark Asheville Site Leader.
These nonprofits tackle issues from providing diapers to parents that don’t have access, to helping veterans heal with holistic and natural means. Learn more about the nonprofits that were selected.
We started the day at Hatchworks Coworking and Anthroware, thanks to support from Hatch AVL, with a beautiful breakfast spread by Celine & Company, shirts provided by Real Thread and designed by local designer, Reggie Tidwell with Curve Theory and some gorgeous notebooks donated by Inkwell Press.
Makers spent the entire morning working together in teams to complete projects including rebrands, websites, print materials, social media toolkits and more.
The 12 hour crunch didn’t stop them from taking breaks to enjoy snacks and food from 12 Bones, Mellow Mushroom, Buchi Kombucha and PennyCup Coffee Co.
Throughout the day, the nonprofits joined their teams for a brief feedback session to review the work, give input and get excited for the final product.
This was the first chance following the planning meetings that the nonprofit representatives got to meet up with their teams and see what the makers had been working on all morning.
The afternoon was spent taking valuable feedback from the nonprofits and turning it into action. After the rush to complete projects, Demos + Drinks kicked off with support from Hopey & Company.
Demos are a chance for the makers to show off their work from the day to the other makers and nonprofits. Below are some examples of the work completed at the event.
