If on one hand, startups have revolutionized markets and the way we live, on the hand, large corporations have the intrinsic capacity to deal with newness. Faced with the call to positively impacting society, it seems very natural to me to catalyze these two powerful driving forces in a more efficient and consistent way within our present day challenges.

While startups have the luxury of building from scratch, companies are challenged to innovate amid an already rooted corporate culture. I agree with Steve Blank when he proposes that innovation in a big corporation is not just the sum of new technologies, key company acquisitions and a team of intelligent people. Business innovation means setting aside old beliefs and values and influencing hundreds of employees. And yet, failing to plant the seeds of innovation within the company’s culture can destroy any effort to innovate.

“Business innovation means setting aside old beliefs and values and influencing hundreds of employees”

But the culture of innovation that I believe in is one that is created in synchrony with innovation in the form of new products, services or business. As we test, we learn, evolve and reflect on the process. Therefore, we work with form and content at the same time. This prototype logic (and learning by doing, including mistakes) so strong in startups, combined with a collaborative processes (a quick way to engage various areas of businesses and their customers), present, in my opinion, the most agile and productive tools we have available to promote positive disruptions within organizations.

Working towards a major update of the corporate system makes all the sense in the world to me. At Maker, we practice storydoing. We want to encourage inspirational executives who will be remembered for what they did, for new business models they created and their connection between the needs of people and the time in which they live. The result of a truly effective innovation culture is a company with a unified purpose that can move with agility, speed and passion.
