Task or Relationship focused?

Quick trick question:
Which is more important when running your team: being task focused or relationship focused?

Of course, you know they both matter. As a technical leader, you can’t afford to neglect either one.

But I sometimes didn’t balance very well, because I was better at one than the other. For example, I’m a ‘relationship’ guy. (You might have noticed that!)

I tend to prioritize my relationship building activities above task management activities. This might result in good team relationships and a broken development process.

Other leaders I know are task focused, spending time getting a process or task just right, but not building the relationships needed to get team buy-in. A great process that isn’t followed is useless.
