The Bookmark Awards sets the benchmark for tech, digital and leading edge innovation. The award winning work inspires and educates the industry about the power to build brands through creative and high impact digital executions that deliver measurable results.

On 19 March, our team came together for The Bookmark Awards 2020. This year’s edition went social distancing, due to the outbreak of COVID-19, meaning our entire team watched from the comfort of our own homes. We suited up, got the champagne on ice, jumped on a Hangouts call together and tuned in as the awards were broadcast on the IAB SA’s social channels.

This was our first time entering the awards in our 3 year history, so we were all really excited* (*read nervous) to see the outcome.

For our work this past year, our studio picked up 12 finalists from South Africa’s leading digital award platform. Once finalists were chosen, The Bookmarks entered into its in person judging phase before the winners were announced.

This year, our Creative Director, Ally Behr made it onto one of the 2020 Bookmarks Jury Panels. She served on the Builders Panel that judges multiple categories including; Excellence in Interface Design, Excellence in UX and Platform Innovation.

The Bookmarks’ 90 diverse judges assessed the entries based on stringent, results-based criteria culminating in 139 winners that are truly representative of the South African digital landscape. The 2020 results included 15 Gold Pixels, 47 Silver Pixels and 67 Bronze awards across 71 categories.

We’re honoured to have picked up 9 IAB Bookmark Awards — 2 golds, 4 silvers and 3 bronze: Categories we won in:

  • Platforms — websites, mobile apps and innovation.
  • Emerging Tech — AI.
  • Craft — UX and UI. (The only agency to win in these categories.)

Our work with Pineapple was a big winner on the night.

South Africa’s first peer to peer insurer, set out to reinvent the way insurance is done, with a decentralised peer-to-peer model that aims to reintroduce affinity back into insurance for their young, digital savvy audience. We picked up 2 golds in the ‘Mobile Apps’ and ‘Emerging Tech: AI’ categories. With 3 silvers in the ‘Innovation’, ‘UX’ and ‘UI’ categories.

The Pineapple Mobile App won 2 Golds and 3 Silvers.

Users can insure their items with the snap of a photo. Anywhere. Any time. We used the power of AI and image recognition technology to make the process even faster. Meaning users could insure items in under 60 seconds. No lengthy phone calls. No paperwork.

This wasn’t the first time Pineapple have scooped some awards, winning the MTN Business Consumer Solution.

They also recently won a $1.5 million investment at VentureClash after our work with them.

The work we did on our website won too.

We were also recognised with a Silver (Brand and Commercial Websites) and 2 Bronzes (UX and UI) for our work on our own site. Check out the Communication Arts webpicks case study and some of the other awards we won for it.

MakeReign Website — Winner of 1 Silver and 2 Bronzes.

And the work we did with Wolf&Whale won a Bronze in the ‘UI’ category.

The goals for this website included sharing Wolf&Whale’s client work in a beautiful and simple way, depicting the core creative concept behind the name ‘Wolf&Whale’, as well as ensuring that visitors had a chance to connect with the company and learn more about their services and unique philosophy. The site was also previously recognised with an Awwwards SOTD, FWA of the Day and CSSDesignAwards Website of the Day.

Wolf&Whale — Winner of 1 Bronze in the Craft UI category.

We’re honoured to have been recognised alongside some of the biggest names in advertising. Congratulations to all the other winners! You can check a full list of them here. Stay safe everyone.
