Badass Women in Science

Science Wide Open — Children’s Books About Women in Science

I was exposed to science at an early age. My father has studied and researched biochemistry and molecular biophysics for most of his life.

Me and my science hero

Whether it was receiving a highly technical, scientifically accurate version of the “sex talk” or turning pickles into glowing lightbulbs, I had a fountain of scientific knowledge that I could directly tap into whenever I wanted. All I had to do is ask.

I took this for granted. I assumed that any young boy or girl could simply go to their parents whenever their curiosity got the best of them. Boy was I wrong.

Now that I’m older and only slightly wiser, I’ve realized that not everyone is fortunate enough to have their very own scientific hero to look up to.

As a member of the majority (a white male), it’s easy to lack the empathy needed to understand other, less-represented groups. In this specific case, I’m referring to girls interested in the STEM fields.

There is an extreme lack of role models for these young girls. Just Google “famous scientists,” and you’ll see what I mean.

Only ONE out of the top ten is a woman?!?

Do you want a solution?

Genius Games has one. In case you haven’t heard of them, they are a St. Louis-based educational game company that has continually found success on Kickstarter.

Their most recent project is Science Wide Open, a children’s book series that is transforming the narrative around girls and science. In each book, they explore and teach basic concepts in chemistry, biology, and physics using simple terms and natural curiosity. They take this a step further by highlighting scientific advancements made by women scientists throughout history.

Science Wide Open combines this amazing message with beautiful artwork in order to make science accessible to all. Children of all ages will be able to learn, explore, and pursue science regardless of their background. This is a mission I truly believe in.

Whether you’re a parent, teacher, scientist, brother, sister, friend, or simply someone who cares about equal opportunity for all, Science Wide Open is a chance to provide an actual solution. If you believe in this solution, you can contribute to the Kickstarter campaign here:

Personally, I feel like my dad gave me insight and opportunity that I wouldn’t have found otherwise. Not everyone has their very own science hero to look up to. You can help change this by contributing and spreading the word about Science Wide Open.

Do you have a science hero? Are you interested in contributing to Science Wide Open? I want to hear from you on Facebook and Twitter.
