Meet the Pokemon Master: Ramzul
Meet Ramzul, an ex-caricature artist at Universal Studios Singapore who is now a craftsman who loves Pokemon. A dreamer who would chase his wildest imaginations and does not get discouraged easily.
The Beginning of Pokeballs
When Ramzul was in late primary school, he was a huge Pokemon fan. Having played the first generation, he saw Pokemon as a growing part of his life and as such, went around looking of real life replicas of the Pokeball. However, he was unable to find one to purchase. He ended up deciding to make one himself.
However, this idea had many problems. Firstly, how do you even make one? Ramzul clearly showed that you may have some wild ideas, but the real problem is having a real viable solution that you can execute. He breaks down the Pokeball creation into a few problems he had to find solutions to.
1. Making the Pokeball shell
4. Sourcing for materials
5. Tools that he can use and limitations of his tools
6. How does everything fit together
He did emphasise that all the materials used are commonly found but did not specify what he uses exactly. The main idea that Ramzul is trying to bring across is that improvisation is key to a craftsman; you can create anything you want if you are able to use the materials creatively. He also mentioned that most of his ideas come from his surroundings. Whenever he takes a walk, he looks at everything, keeping an open mind on what he can use to make his Pokeballs. Since he does this for some extra side income, the other things he considers is cost efficiency. Ramzul has always been a frugal person where he only spends on the bare necessities.
“Some things like laser engraver/cutter, it’s very expensive. So just get the cheapest things and make full use of that. You still get the same quality what.“
Managing his Business
Ramzul does most of the crafting himself, with a little help from his assistant — his younger brother who manages the Facebook page for him.
Having only started in September 2014, he has garnered many fans on his Facebook Page under the page “The Pokeball Project”. (https://www.facebook.com/thepokeballproject)
Ramzul shares his secret on gaining popularity so fast.
- Make Pokeball.
- Do giveaways and make sure that people are encouraged to share your Facebook Page.
- Gain popularity.
Ramzul clearly understands the difference between the value that a customer gets from receiving a free pokeball and the cost of making it. To a customer, it’s $75 that the person receives. To Ramzul, it’s only the cost price, which he says is worth the investment to gain publicity. Given that he has about 6300 followers, and about 90 orders pending, I’d say that he has been extremely successful in doing so. In fact so successful, he finds it hard to manage his time, since he has a full time job.
Caricature artist by day, Pokemon master by night. One pokeball takes about an hour to make, however, with his full time job, he does not have much time to work on his Pokeballs. As a direct result, he has quite a bit of back orders that he must attend to. He tries to fix as many Pokeballs as he can whenever he comes back home.
The Road Ahead
Ramzul plans to stop making Pokeballs eventually, since he is going to pursue his other childhood dream; real life Counter Strike in the form of Laser Tag. He has just registered his company and hoping that one day he will realise his dream. He has also been working on gadgets to help the blind navigate their way and would eventually give them for free as he has managed to bring the cost price down very significantly. As for Pokeballs, he plans to teach people on how to make them and he will stop selling.
Our team wishes Ramzul all the best for the journey ahead.
