Andrew Phelan (Andy Spoons) is a musician, songwriter, and woodworker based in Vancouver, BC, Canada. Andy sells his traditionally crafted spoons, utensils, coffee scoops, and other hand-carved items on Etsy. He solely uses hand tools, an axe and a knife, in his carving process and finishes the spoons in natural oils.

What inspires you to keep making things?
“Every time I pick up my tools to work, I know that the material is going to have a completely new conversation with me. There is always another piece of the design to focus on, always another factor involving grain, moisture, species, etc. It is brand new every single time, and that is constantly exiting to me.”
What one piece of advice would you give to other makers?
“Keep carving. I can’t stress that enough. If you have a question about the process, try it yourself first, there is no better teacher than time and experience. The more you work with a material or a design, the easier it becomes. Patience and time will always win out over quick tips and tricks!”
