Vansdesign is a self-taught designer and digital artist who was born in Egypt, raised in Greece, and is now based in Italy. His artworks blend many styles to generate colorful, abstract creations. Components of fundamental design principles, abstraction, and minimalism are often found within his creations. Usually beginning with simple shapes and colors, Vansdesign masterfully manipulates them into complex, thought-provoking forms which are usually abstract, 3D and/or animated.
Growing up in Greece and Italy, two ancient art capitals of the world, Vansdesign has been constantly surrounded by art, naturally sparking a sense of creativity within him early on. Since childhood, Vansdesign has been drawn to deconstruction and recreation. What started as tearing down lego sets and performing surgeries that breathed new life into his various toys eventually became a central tenet within Vansdesign’s creations. In his later years, Vansdesign became more involved with the internet and technology, thus leading to his career in design and much of the artwork we see today.
While each of Vansdesign’s creations is distinct and possesses a unique style of it’s own, his overall style can be recognized through his use of bold colors; clearly defined shapes and lines; and hypnotizing animation effects.
Digital Vandalism : Censored
This animated creation is part of Vansdesign’s Digital Vandalism series in which he digitally “vandalizes” a number of classical master paintings to provide viewers with a new, modern perspective.
With this latest creation, Vansdesign overlays a classic 19th century painting with animation and digital distortions to relay a 21st century message. In this artwork, free-thinkers’ voices and identities are stifled through glaring (literally) censorship.
This artwork sets itself apart from Vansdesign usual creations with it’s high level of complexity: It consists of a multi-layered structure containing distinct localized distortions and effects on each layer. The entire artwork and it’s many layers is pulled together by a glitched audio which adds another level of complexity to this piece.
The overall result is a showcase of the contrast between old and new, and how it relates to the concept of censorship. A critical look at censorship within today’s society, Digital Vandalism : Censored, is sure to leave viewers contemplating the role of censorship over the years, and how it manifests within their own daily lives.
