Theres a lot of problems with social media. But recent events have proven it still can be a force for good.

The world we currently live in can seem unrecognisable. Our western freedoms are at risk of being compromised. Business’ prioritise company interests before human dignity and people seem dangerously disconnected with reality.

Unfortunately something sensational and shocking will engage better than something truthful and sober.

The problem with social media is that it has given a few loud people with fringe beliefs a global voice. This coupled with anonymity and a built in inability for emotional language to be felt online has lead to a runaway emotional feedback in our digital content. Unfortunately something sensational and shocking will engage better than something truthful and sober.

So these are trying times. The real and digital spaces seem hostile and can make you feel depressed and lonely. However it is clear that there is a big concerted effort to push back. Freedom of not only speech but to criticise is fundamental to our democratic ideals. Fortunately this feeling once experienced is hard to change. After all people tend to stand up to bad stuff in big ways and small ways.

Caramel the chihuahua was stolen from her young owner last year. But found due to social media.

For us at CrowdEmotion social media can be so much more than content. We want to make our online communication emotionally intelligent. We work towards a future where there is no difference in the way we exchange ideas in real life and online.

In the meantime keep using social media for good and keep treating people with care and dignity.
